Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to question particular calls from the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
